Bertrand Bonello, Rebecca Zlotowski and Robert Eggers’ The Lighthouse, starring Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe, are among the films set for the Directors’ Fortnight sidebar at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, which is set to run May 14-25.
Oscar winner Luca Guadagnino’s short film The Staggering Girl will make its world premiere in the Fortnight lineup in a special screening.
Rebecca Zlotowski’s coming-of-age story An Easy Girl and Bertrand Bonello’s voodo drama Zombi Child, both of which had been tipped for slots this year, will also world premiere in the section, organizers unveiled Tuesday.
Eggers’ The Lighthouse, the 35mm, black-and-white epic, is also in the competition portion of the section, after being a surprise omission from Cannes’ Official Selection.
The sidebar will also bring in director Robert Rodriguez for a master class, following the international premiere of his famously low-budget thriller Red 11.
As previously announced, Quentin Dupiex’s Deerskin, starring Jean Dujardin, will open the section, while John Carpenter will receive the Golden Coach award.
It is the first selection under new artistic director Paolo Moretti and the section’s gender-equal selection committee. Of the 23 features in the Directors’ Fortnight competition, four are from female helmers, while an equal number are first films.
