This year’s panel will be tres chic with French fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier set to walk the famous red carpet steps of the Cannes Palais alongside German model-turned-actress Diane Kruger and Scottish international heartthrob Ewan McGregor.
Festival boss Thierry Fremaux made an appearance on Canal Plus’ morning show La Matinale on Wednesday where he said that Gaultier, Kruger, McGregor, American writer-director Alexander Payne and Haitian filmmaker Raoul Peck would serve on this year’s feature films jury.
The festival completed Moretti’s 2012 jury team later in the day with the additions of British director Andrea Arnold, Palestinian helmer Hiam Abbass and French actress Emmanuelle Devos.
Moretti and his team will choose the Palme d’Or winner from this year’s 22-strong competition lineup. The festival runs May 16-27.
Gaultier’s participation will mark the first time that a fashion designer serves on the jury, though he is no stranger to the big screen, having designed the costumes for Luc Besson‘s The Fifth Element. Kruger also will add her signature touch of glam to the fest, familiar territory for the actress who starred in Quentin Tarantino‘s Inglourious Basterds in 2009 and served two years earlier as Mistress of Ceremonies in Cannes.
“Jean Paul Gaultier is a designer who has worked a lot in film and has already been, in one way or another, in competition. It’s important because these people will be judging the creme de la creme of world cinema, so they need to have a certain legitimacy,” Fremaux said. He also called Gaultier “a joyous, curious, generous, enthusiastic man who is also a cinephile.”
Fremaux denied reports that Ryan Gosling is coming to Cannes as a member of the jury.
Descendants writer-director Payne will head from Hawaii to the Cote d’Azur to join Italian helmer Moretti at the 65th annual festival.
Belgian director Jean-Pierre Dardenne will preside over the Cinefondation and short films jury, and British actor Tim Roth will reign over the Un Certain Regard panel.
Of this year’s crop of competition films vying for the Palme d’Or, Fremaux said, “This selection represents a sort of reincarnation of American cinema that reoccupies this space created over the past years between tiny independent films and Hollywood blockbusters.”
