The Cannes Film Festival has unveiled the jury for this year’s festival and, as is typical for the world’s most prestigious film fest, it is a mix of A-list stars and hot up-and-comers.
Definitely in the first category are actors Jake Gyllenhaal and Sienna Miller, who together with Cannes jury presidents Joel and Ethan Coen form the American contingent on this year’s jury.
Gyllenhaal is red hot following his Golden Globe-nominated performance as a psychopathic L.A. crime reporter in Nightcrawler. The actor is no stranger to the festival, having appeared in David Fincher‘s Zodiac, which screened in Cannes in 2007. MIller strode the Cannes red carpet just last year for Bennett Miller‘s competition title Foxcatcher.
French star Sophie Marceau, whose credits include playing a princess to Mel Gibson‘s Braveheart and both Bond girl and Bond villain in The World is Not Enough (1999), will be the sole French member of this year’s jury. Joining her is Rossy de Palma, the Spanish actress famous for playing out-there eccentrics in the films of Cannes favorite Pedro Almodovar.
On the director’s side, Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, whose Pan’s Labyrinth premiered in Cannes competition in 2006 en route to a trio of Oscar wins, returns to the Croisette for jury duty, as does Canadian filmmaker Xavier Dolan. Just 26 years old, Dolan has already had four films in Cannes, with his last, Mommy, sharing the Grand Jury prize with Jean-Luc Godard‘s Goodbye to Language in 2014.
Completing the nine-person jury is Rokia Traore, a film composer and singer-songwriter from Mali whose work includes music for the 2005 omnibus documentary All the Invisible Children.
