U.S. Dramatic Competition
CANNES – Australian-based Odin’s Eye Entertainment (OEE) has picked up sales rights outside of North America to Sundance title The Comedy from writer/director Rick Alverson.
Tribeca Film recently snatched North American rights to the feature and plans a small theatrical run day-and-date with a VOD and online launch.
Despite its title, The Comedy is a drama and stars Tim Heidecker as an aging Brooklyn hipster who loafs around with his friends, indifferent to the idea of inheriting his father’s grand estate. Brent Kunckle and Mike Ryan produced The Comedy with independent record label Jagjaguwar.
The Comedy divided audiences and critics at Sundance, something Odin’s Eye CEO Michael Favelle said could work in its favor.
“Provocative and subversive The Comedy is impossible to ignore and dismiss,” said Favelle. “It will have people arguing about it for decades to come”. ODE will first screen The Comedy to buyers in Cannes on Saturday.
