Focus Features has picked up Andrea Arnold’s drama American Honey, starring Shia LaBeouf, for much of the world, signing a deal in Cannes with sales group Protagonist Pictures to take rights for the U.K., Germany, Spain, Italy, Scandinavia and Australia/New Zealand.
Focus will release the film via Universal Pictures International. A24 will bow American Honey stateside, via a deal signed with CAA. Ahead of Cannes, Protagonist closed deals for France (Diaphana), Latin America (Sun Distribution) and Benelux (Cineart).
American Honey follows the story of Star (Sasha Lane), a troubled teen who runs away with a group, including Jake (LaBeouf). The group criss-crosses the U.S. selling magazine subscriptions door-to-door. Riley Keough co-stars.
Parts & Labor and Pulse Films produced American Honey in association with Mandown Pictures, with Lars Knudsen, Jay Van Hoy, Pouya Shahbazian, Alice Weinberg, Thomas Benski and Lucas Ochoa as producers. Maven Pictures, Film4 and BFI provided financing with development funds coming from Film4 and BFI.
Executive producers are Rose Garnett, David Kosse, Ben Roberts, Lizzie Francke, Celine Rattray, Trudie Styler, Charlotte Ubben, Hardy Justice, Harisa Clifford, Paul Grindey, Mike Goodridge and Melissa Hook Shahbazian.
American Honey premieres in competition in Cannes on Sunday.
