Next Entertainment WorldSEOUL — South Korean erotic drama Obsessed topped the local box office over the weekend, bringing in $5.2 million, according to the Korean Film Council.
The opening score is impressive as the film, with a limiting rating that designates it for people 19 and over, faced tough competition from Hollywood imports Godzilla and Transcendence. They opened on the same day as Obsessed, taking the second and third spots in the box-office ranking, respectively, with $4.47 million and $3.33 million.
Coming next were The Target, a critically acclaimed local action film that is getting a midnight screening at Cannes, and The King’s Wrath, a Korean period drama starring popular actor Hyun Bin. Gaumont will collaborate with CJ Entertainment to handle international sales for The Target, a remake of French film Point Blank.

Meanwhile, Obsessed, which made its market debut in Cannes, has been pre-sold to Hong Kong and Macau via Bravo Pictures. Its sales representative Finecut expects to wrap more deals during the Cannes market.
The film is written and directed by Kim Dae-woo, who is known for doing erotic romance films, including The Servant and Untold Scandal (script). In the film, Asian superstar Song Seung-heon plays an elite military officer on the fast track to becoming a general. He risks his marriage and career, however, when he falls for the beautiful wife of a subordinate officer.
The film has been making headlines for featuring nude scenes, particularly by the 38-year-old Song who has been long associated with innocent love stories.
“I think I had created a certain framework for myself as an actor and limited myself to playing certain roles. But filming Obsessed really allowed me to free myself from my own inhibitions, and now I’m looking forward to trying out a greater variety of characters,” said Song.
