Sundance Selects has acquired all North American rights to Jonas Carpignano’s A Ciambra, which premiered this week in Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight program and was executive produced by Martin Scorsese.
The gritty coming-of-age film is Carpignano’s follow-up to Mediterranea, which Sundance Selects also distributed. The movie focuses on a small Romani community in Calabria where a 14-year-old tries to step into his brother’s shoes when the brother disappears and things start to go wrong.
Arianna Bocco, executive vp acquisitions and production negotiated the deal with WME on behalf of the filmmakers.
“Jonas Carpignano’s A Ciambra is a compelling and accomplished film,” said Scorsese. “The world is so realized, so intimate, that I felt as if I was living alongside its characters and Carpignano himself. What he does with his young lead, drawing from him a mature and complex performance, is truly remarkable. A moving and beautiful picture.”
Said Carpignano: “F—, yeah! The road to Cannes has been a long and wonderful journey with many people, particularly the Amato family. After working together on my first film Mediterranea, I’m really happy that Sundance Selects has been so enthusiastic about working together again.”
Jonathan Sehring and Lisa Schwartz, co-presidents of IFC Films/Sundance Selects, said: “With his debut film, Jonas Carpignano quickly established himself as one of the most exciting new directors in the world. A Ciambra represents the best of what cinema can show us about different cultures colliding and a young boy coming-of age, giving us hope for the future.
