Amazon Studios and Broad Green Pictures have set a U.S. release date for Nicolas Winding Refn’s hotly anticipated new feature, The Neon Demon.
The film, which stars Elle Fanning, Jena Malone, Bella Heathcote, Karl Glusman, Abbey Lee, Christina Hendricks and Keanu Reeves, will go out in U.S. theaters, via Broad Green, on June 24.
Neon Demon will have its world premiere in competition in Cannes on May 20. The horror movie is centered on Fanning’s character, an aspiring model who moves to Los Angeles and is set upon by a group of beauty-obsessed women who will do anything to devour her youth and vitality.
Neon Demon is Refn’s second film set in L.A., following his breakout hit Drive in 2011. The Danish director’s last film was the controversial Only God Forgives, which premiered in competition in Cannes in 2013.
Amazon’s domestic distribution deal will see Broad Green release Neon Demon in theaters in the U.S. as well as handling the film’s home entertainment release before it goes out online via Amazon Prime.
Amazon’s willingness to work with the traditional theatrical release model is in sharp contrast to competitor Netflix, which demands day-and-date releases for its films.
Partly as a consequence, the traditional film industry has embraced Amazon. This year there are a total of five Amazon films screening in Cannes’ official selection.
