CANNES – Un Certain Regard is going to kick off with a party. After announcing that Pablo Trapero would head up the Un Certain Regard jury this year, the Cannes film festival has revealed that French film Party Girl will open the sidebar on May 15.
Party Girl was written and co-directed by the team of Marie Amachoukeli, Claire Burger and Samuel Theis. The trio has an established presence at Cannes, with their short film Forbach having earned the Cinefondation sidebar’s second prize in 2008 and C’est gratuite pour les filles in play during the Semaine de la Critique sidebar in 2009. That short film went on to win the Cesar in its category in 2010.
Party Girl tells the story of aging nightclub hostess Angelique who agrees to marry a regular client when she feels she has reached the end of her career; it represents a grittier France than audiences might be used to. Based on a true story, the title character is played by the real-life Angelique.
Party Girl was produced by Elzevir Films and will be distributed by Pyramide Films.
The main competition and Un Certain Regard slates will be unveiled April 17 in Paris.
