Strand Releasing has acquired all U.S. rights to Celine Sciamma‘s Girlhood, which premiered as the opening night film at the Directors Fortnight at the recent Cannes Film Festival. The film stars Karidja Toure as a 16-year-old caught up in a girl gang in the northwest area of Paris.
The distributor is planning an early 2015 release.
The deal was negotiated by Jon Gerrans of Strand Releasing and Nicolas Brigaud-Robert of Films Distribution.
“Sciamma is just over 30 and a wonder kid of French cinema. In just three movies, she went from ‘promising’ to ‘prominent.’ Film critics and movie lovers have been supporting her work around the world for a good reason since the beginning: her storytelling is a breath of fresh air in European cinema, and she directs with a true cinematic energy seldom seen in French movies,” said Brigaud-Robert.
