French major StudioCanal has boarded Bastille Day, a new action thriller from Woman in Black director James Watkins that stars Idris Elba (Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom) and rising French star Adele Exarchopoulos (Blue Is the Warmest Color).
StudioCanal will fully finance the project and is selling the feature worldwide. Source Code producer Philippe Rousselet will produce Bastille Day together with Anonymous Content.
At a presentation in Cannes of its upcoming slate, StudioCanal also announced it would be financing and handling world sales on the next project from Italian director Luca Guadagnino (I Am Love). The as-yet-untitled feature, described as a sexy thriller, will re-team Guadagnino with his I Am Love star Tilda Swinton. Ralph Fiennes, Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street) and Matthias Schoenaerts (Rust and Bone) co-star. Producer on the film is Michael Costigan (The Counselor).
As is its wont, StudioCanal will distribute the film in the U.K., France, Germany and Australia/U.K. A U.S. studio deal for Bastille Day is expected soon, likely during Cannes.
Also on StudioCanal’s slate is the Working Title Brit crime drama Legend, starring Tom Hardy as notorious London East End gangsters the Kray twins.
The company has flown in Bastille Day director Watkins and Legend writer-director Brian Helgeland to pitch their project to select international buyers in Cannes.
