He might have several films in the Oscar race, but Weinstein also is ramping up his TV presence, with a slew of projects, his first visit to the MIPCOM market and a new awards show for dancing.
The Weinstein Company is cruising into Cannes with a new short film project, produced in partnership with Japanese carmaker Lexus. The inaugural Life is Amazing series features five shorts created by filmmakers from the U.S., Europe, Asia Pacific, China and Japan, each of whom Harvey Weinstein and The Weinstein Company’s COO, David Glasser, handpicked. It will get a red carpet premiere during the Cannes International Film Festival on May 19.
“We nurture upcoming talent from all over the world and see great value in creating opportunities for their work to be recognized,” said Harvey Weinstein. “For a young filmmaker to showcase their film during Cannes is an amazing achievement, and we’re proud to have partnered with Lexus in seeing these evocative films through and enabling them to be shown on this world stage.” Each chosen director was asked to create a short film, three to six minutes in length, that captures the theme “life is amazing.” The featured filmmakers are Cristina Molino of Spain; Justin Tipping from the U.S., Chan Chung Ki of Hong Kong; Mitsuyo Miyazaki of Japan; and Campbell Hooper and Joel Kefali from New Zealand, both of whom work under the banner Special Problems.
“These films demonstrate how innovative, dynamic storytelling can challenge the imagination and reinforce that life is an amazing experience,” said Tokuo Fukuichi, executive vp of Lexus International.
The red carpet premiere and screening event will take place at the Olympia 2 cinema at 5:45 p.m. on Sunday.
