CANNES – The Weinstein Co. is going back into business with John Carney, paying an estimated $3 million for U.S. rights to the Irish filmmaker’s next movie, Sing Street.
The deal with WME Global was struck at the Cannes Film Festival, where the project is also being shopped to foreign buyers by FilmNation. It is the second high-profile pact struck by WME at Cannes after Nightcrawler, which Open Road Films has picked up (WME co-repped that title with CAA).
TWC is already distributing Carney’s Begin Again, which opens in theaters on July 4.

Carney is teaming with U2’s Bono and The Edge to make Sing Street, a semi-biographical tale inspired by the filmmaker’s love of music.
Sing Street, set to begin production in Dublin this summer, tells the story of 14-year-old Cosmo, a kid growing up in 1980s Dublin who is intent on breaking free from his screwed-up home life.
He writes a song, forms a scrappy band with some schoolmates, writes more songs and shoots some wicked music videos. When he realizes he can’t save his family, he runs off with his 15-year-old wannabe model girlfriend to London.
Bono and The Edge, who have longtime ties to Carney, will be involved in the film’s music, as well as the film itself.
Anthony Bregman and Carney are producing in partnership with Kevin Frakes, Raj Brinder Singh, Paul Trijbits and Christian Grass.
