Acclaimed German director Wim Wenders will avoid the flash and style of Baz Luhrmann‘s 3D lensing of Cannes festival opener The Great Gatsby for his new 3D drama, Every Thing Will Be Fine, starring James Franco.
“The Great Gatsby is not our idea of 3D at all,” Wenders told The Hollywood Reporter, “I don’t want to criticize Baz’s work in any way but our idea of 3D is very different. Our idea is not at all effect driven but character driven and story driven. All these American films and blockbusters use 3D as an attraction in itself, which we are not doing. Out idea is that the best 3D is where you forget after a few minutes that you are watching a film in 3D.”
Wenders is in Cannes closing financing for Every Thing Will Be Fine ahead of the start of principle photography, set for August in Quebec. In addition to Franco, Sarah Polley has been rumored to be attached to the project but Wenders said he was still “right in the middle” of casting the two female leads and no deals were yet done.
On Saturday, Sweden’s iVast came on board the project as a co-producer. Hanway is handling international pre-sales at the Marche.
Every Thing Will Be Fine is hotly-anticipated following Wenders’ Oscar-nominated 3D dance film Pina, which many critics called groundbreaking in its use of the 3D medium.
Wenders has already wrapped principle photography on yet another 3D project, Cathedrals of Culture, an ambitious omnibus documentary series of six films, each by a different director. Wenders said he has finished shooting his segment of the series, each of which will examine an iconic European building as a window into a society’s culture.
Oscar-winning director James Marsh (Man on Wire), Danish filmmaker Michael Madsen (Into Eternity), Brazilian Karim Ainouz (Love for Sale) and Austrian director Michael Glawogger (Workingman’s Death) will each helm an episode in the series. An sixth director, rumored to be an A-list American filmmaker, is expected to be named by the end of next week.
