Cannes favorite Carlos Reygadas told Mexican media recently that in October he will begin filming “a cowboy story” tentatively titled Donde Nace la Vida (Where Life Is Born).
Speaking prior to a screening of his dark drama Post Tenebras Lux, Reygadas told the Mexican daily El Universal that he’s currently casting in both Mexico and the U.S. He added that he might cast a professional actor for the film, marking a departure from his previous movies, which feature nonactors.
All four of Reygadas‘ films have competed at Cannes. The self-taught helmer won best director on the Croisette in 2012 for Post Tenebras Lux, and in 2007 his Mennonite love story Silent Light took home the Cannes jury award.
Reygadas writes, directs and produces his own films under the Mexico City-based shingle Mantarraya Producciones. Mantarraya produced Amat Escalante‘s brutal drug war drama Heli, which won best director in Cannes’ official competition last year.
Mantarraya did not respond to THR‘s request for more specific details about the production.
