AP Images/InvisionThree-time Cannes winner Carlos Reygadas (Silent Light) and his producing partner Jaime Romandia have bowed Mexican film school Escine, featuring a staff of award-winning directors, cinematographers and screenwriters.
Part of upstart Escine’s three-year study program includes master classes from Reygadas, producer Romandia (The Untamed) and filmmaker Amat Escalante, who won best director at Cannes for his brutal drug war drama Heli in 2013 and the Venice Silver Lion earlier this year for The Untamed.
Other acclaimed talent to teach at the school are director Jorge Michel Grau (We Are What We Are), filmmaker Julio Hernandez Cordon (I Promise You Anarchy) and cinematographer Maria Jose Secco (The Golden Dream).
Reygadas, a self-taught writer-director, is one of Mexico’s most successful indie filmmakers, and his art house movies have influenced a new generation of helmers. His production house Mantarraya also distributes Mexican and foreign fare.
Escine’s tuition fee is significantly more expensive than Mexico City’s Centro de Capacitacion Cinematografica, one of the nation’s top film schools.
Romandia said the school aims to teach students how to make good films on modest budgets, as Reygadas and Escalante have done successfully throughout their careers.
“The idea is you don’t need big budgets to make a film,” said Romandia, who unveiled the new school Monday at the Morelia Film Festival alongside Escine director Fabian Hofman.
