Todd Haynes‘ Carol has won this year’s prize for best international literary adaptation at the Frankfurt Book Fair.
The feature, which debuted in Cannes competition in May and is set to hit U.S. theaters in November, is based on Patricia Highsmith‘s 1952 novel The Price of Salt about the forbidden love between two woman in 1950s New York.
The film stars Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara. Phyllis Nagy adapted the book for the screen. Mara won the best actress honor in Cannes for her performance.
The Frankfurt Book Fair is the world’s biggest trade fair for the international publishing industry, with more than 270,000 attendees from more than 100 countries. Frankfurt introduced the best adaptation honor in 2004 to highlight the best in literary film adaptations and the original books that inspired them.
Previous winners include Stephen Daldry‘s adaptation of Jonathan Safran Foer’s novel Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close; Anton Corbijn‘s version of John le Carre‘s A Most Wanted Man and Ziad Doueiri‘s feature film version of Yasmina Khadra‘s novel The Attack.
