Carol was awarded for best cinematography at the 31st Film Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday.
Cinematographer Ed Lachman beat out Cary Fukunaga (Beasts of No Nation), Joshua James Richards (Songs My Brothers Taught Me), Michael Gioulakis (It Follows) and Reed Morano (Meadowland). After receiving his award Lachman remarked on the system of awards shows.
“Awards are always unfair if you win or you lose,” said Lachman. “This film is a small voice with an echo that says we all have the right to love and be loved. Thank you.”
The awards were handed out in a tent on the beach in Santa Monica at a ceremony hosted by Silicon Valley‘s Kumail Nanjiani and Saturday Night Live‘s Kate McKinnon.
