Catherine Hardwicke’s YA Movie ‘Stargirl’ Finds Its Stars (Exclusive)

Rising actors Joey King and Charlie Plummer will star in Stargirl, Catherine Hardwicke’s return to the YA field with an adaptation of the novel by Jerry Spinelli.

Gotham Group (Maze Runner), Hahnscape Entertainment (Tumbledown) and BCDF Pictures (The Outskirts) are producing.

Published in 2000, the book centers on a homeschooled teenage girl who enrolls in an Arizona high school and through her non-conformity alters the ecosystem of the student body, while at the same time capturing the heart of star-struck boy. But when the student body turns on her, the boy tells her to go against her nature and try to fit in. 

King will play Stargirl, while Plummer will play the boy who narrates the story.

Kristin Hahn wrote the script for the project, which will shoot in New Mexico in the fall.

CAA is handling domestic distribution rights.  Red Granite International will handle foreign sales.

King was the child star who played Ramona in Ramona and Beezus, going on to collect credits with movies such as Crazy Stupid Love and The Dark Knight Rises, as well as the first season of FX’s Fargo. In a testament to her demand, she has a slew of upcoming projects, including Roland Emmerich’s gay drama Stonewall in addition to the director’s Independence Day: Resurgence. She is repped by Coast to Coast, Industry, and Hirsch Wallerstein.  

Plummer was one of the finalists for the part of Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the rebooted franchise. He had a run on HBO’s Boardwalk Empire and just wrapped his third season on Cold War-thriller Granite Falls. The actor, who also starred in the indie drama King Jack, is repped by CAA, Primary Wave, Zoom Talent, and Peikoff

Hardwicke latest movie, Miss You Already, premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival.
