Alcon has picked up the North American distribution rights to Chernobyl Diaries, the latest horror movie from Oren Peli of Paranormal Activity fame. Rights for Germany, Spain and Japan were also part of Alcon’s acquisition.
Alcon, which releases its movies through Warner Bros, will open the movie Memorial Day weekend this year.
Peli did not direct the movie but wrote the story and produced with Brian Witten. Brad Parker, a visual effect supervisor, makes his debut as director on the movie.
Diaries is set in the city of Prypiat that once housed the workers of the Chernobyl nuclear reactor and follows a group of friends who, while vacationing in Europe, find themselves stranded in the abandoned city only to discover that they are not alone.
It was fully financed and sold internationally by FilmNation Entertainment. Alcon’s Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson are executive producing.
Alcon just began production on Beautiful Creatures, directed by Richard LaGravenese and starring Emma Thompson, Viola Davis, Jack O’Connell and Alice Englert.
