Cheryl Boone Isaacs and DeVon Franklin will be honored for continuing Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy in the entertainment industry. The two are set to receive awards from the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in Los Angeles, an organization that was established by King in 1964.

Isaacs, president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, will receive the Rosa Parks Humanitarian Award for improving human rights. The organization presents the honor to those who “lead in the task of bridge building and creating relationships of mutuality and respect while achieving strategic movement forward.”
Franklin, president and CEO of the Sony Studio-based Franklin Entertainment and best-selling author, will receive the Rev. Thomas Kilgore, Jr. Prophetic Witness Award for his commitment to social activism (Kilgore helped establish the SCLC-SC with King). Franklin is currently gearing up for his next producing project, the faith-based Miracles From Heaven, starring Jennifer Garner.

Isaacs and Franklin will receive their awards at the SCLC-SC King Legacy Awards Gala on Jan. 18, 2016, hosted by CBS’s Code Black actor William Allen Young. The organization has previously honored Greys Anatomy’s Jesse Williams.
“The SCLC-SC King Legacy Awards Gala is special, because it is presented by the only organization established by Dr, King, and honors those men and women who reflect the mission, vision and dream of our founder, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.,” said SCLC-SC, President and CEO Pastor William D. Smart, Jr. “In addition, the SCLC-SC King Legacy Week provides a diversity of programming over seven days for everyone of all ages and backgrounds.”
The MLK legacy week, running from Jan. 11-18, 2016, consists of programming for the community including a youth Essay and Oratorical Contest, an SCLC-SC/Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Civic Engagement Day and an Annual Interfaith Prayer Breakfast.
