So, how does Han Solo understand Chewbacca’s howls? On set, the answer is … because he spoke English (and with a British accent).
Footage from the set of The Empire Strikes Back made the rounds online over the weekend after documentarian Jamie Benning surfaced it, and Chewbacca actor Peter Mayhew tweeted his approval, writing, “Wonderful bit of stuff.”

Some day, someone should create a cut of these movies with Mayhew speaking as Chewbacca and Darth Vader actor David Prowse speaking as the character (as he did on set).
