MEXICO CITY — Chilean director Sebastian Lelio‘s dramedy Gloria won best director, screenplay and actress on Saturday at the first edition of the Premios Platino in Panama City.
Paulina Garcia took home best actress for her performance in Gloria, a character study about a middle-aged divorcee.
The Platino for best director went to Mexico’s Amat Escalante for his brutal drug war drama, Heli. Escalante landed best director at Cannes last year.
Eugenio Derbez got a best actor nod for his role as a single dad in the hit Mexican comedy Instructions Not Included. Derbez directed and stars in Instructions, which became the highest-grossing Spanish-language film of all time in both the U.S. and Mexico.
Brazilian actress Sonia Braga (Kiss of the Spider Woman) received a career achievement award.
The first edition of the Premios Platino took place Saturday evening during the Panama International Film Festival. Launched by producers associations EGEDA and FIPCA, the event aims to unite 22 film-producing nations in Latin America and the Iberian Peninsula. Organizers hope the ceremony can serve as a platform to establish an Ibero-American star system.
Unlike the successful model used in Hollywood, producers in Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking territories normally cannot count on star power as a box-office draw.
“There’s no star system in Spain,” said award-winning Spanish producer Antonio Chavarrias. “Antonio Banderas and Javier Bardem rarely work in Spain, and Penelope Cruz isn’t a guarantee.”
The same holds true for Mexico, according to Leonardo Zimbron, producer of last year’s box-office hit We are the Nobles.
“I don’t think we have a star system, we have some bankable stars, but we’re talking about maybe six names,” he said.
Zimbron believes it’s possible to establish a star system, but first agreements must be made so that films can travel better within the region, and that requires a long-term commitment, he says.
