Gravity soared past The Hunger Games: Catching Fire at the Chinese box office as the two Hollywood epics went head-to-head in theaters last week.
Alfonso Cuaron‘s space thriller brought in $35.76 million box office in its first six days in China, compared with $12.95 million for the Jennifer Lawrence blockbuster.
According to data from research group Entgroup for the week through Sunday, the 3D version of Gravity had 175,018 screenings, more than twice the 88,771 screenings for Catching Fire. Its average ticket price of $6.70 was also higher than the Hunger Games sequel’s $5.20.
Gravity chalked up more than 5.37 million admissions in the world’s second biggest movie market, compared to nearly 2.48 million admissions for Catching Fire.
It was a strong overall week for Hollywood movies in China.
Thor: The Dark World took $6.34 million during the week to reach a cume of $52.78 million, while Escape Plan’s solid performance continued. The film brought in $4.55 million for a China total of $38.91 million.
The biggest Chinese movie of the week, and the only new mainland China release, was Huayi Brothers-produced Control, which took $3.5 million in its first three days and had 686,000 admissions. The movie is a suspense thriller starring Chinese-American Daniel Wu, Hong Kong star Simon Yam and Taiwan’s Leon Dai.
Huayi Brothers will be pleased with the performance of Control in a week when two big Hollywood movies opened. It had aimed Control at second- and third-tier cities.
Bruce Willis starrer Red 2 took another $2.57 million to bring its cumulative China total to $8.5 million, while Hotel Transylvania made another $660,000 to bring its cume to $11.85 million.
The Zhang Hanyu and Wang Luodan-starring Love You for Loving Me took the eighth box-office spot, bringing its total to $4.79 million, followed by romantic comedy My Boyfriends, which has made $1.12 million, and Love Speaks, which has made a total of $3.73 million in 17 days.
