China Lion has acquired North American, Australian and New Zealand rights for the directorial debut of Chinese actor Chen Jianbin, a drama called A Fool.
Jiang Qinqin stars as Chen’s hapless wife and Wang Xuebing plays his scheming friend. Jin Shijia, a well-known TV and theater actor, co-stars.
The film will have its North American premiere on June 26, the opening day of the 14th annual New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF), which runs through July 11.
China Lion has not yet set the North American or Australian/New Zealand release date. The film is expected to receive a Greater China release in late 2015, including a wide release throughout the Mainland.
A Fool is based on Hu Xuewen‘s novella Running Moonlight, and it features Chen as a Northern Chinese shepherd fighting to get his son released from prison.
As he attempts bribery to secure the release, a wanderer enters his life, completely upending his strategy and leading to confusion and disaster.
Chen also wrote the feature adaptation, and was a major winner at the 51st annual Golden Horse Awards, taking home both best new director and best leading actor gongs.
The film was additionally nominated for best feature, best supporting actor for Wang Xuebing and best adapted screenplay.
Chen is best known for the hugely popular TV show, Three Kingdoms, and he has also featured in the movies Paradise in Service and Chrysanthemum Tea.
“We are incredibly fortunate to be able to hold the North American premiere of A Fool at the New York Asian Film Festival, a forum where entertaining, interesting and unique Asian-centric fare like Chen Jianbin’s masterful work will find its first audience,” said Robert Lundberg, COO of China Lion Film Distribution.
Ablaze Image is selling the film internationally, which was produced by the Shandong Jiabo Culture Development Company. The film is also one of 10 Mainland Chinese films scheduled for release in Taiwan.
