The company managing a Chinese tourist hotspot used as a location in Michael Bay‘s Transformers: Age of Extinction is suing the film’s producers for $3.35 million, claiming Paramount Pictures Corporation and its production partners failed to show a logo of the scenic spot in the film.
Chongqing Wulong Karst Tourism (Group) Co. Ltd., owners of the Wulong Scenic Area had previously threatened to file suit against the film’s producers for not receiving the desired exposure from the film, but now they have formally begun legal proceedings. The company filed a lawsuit against Paramount and Beijing-based 1905 Internet Technology Co. Ltd at Chongqing No. 3 Intermediate People’s Court reported Xinhua News Agency on Wednesday. The court accepted the suit.
The Chinese tourism company claims Paramount and its partners reneged on a $770,000 (4.8 million RMB) product placement contract that promised to display the “China Wulong” logo during scenes shot in the Wulong Scenic Area. Not only did the film not display the logo, but confusingly combined shots in Wulong with scenes filmed in Hong Kong, giving the impression that the scenic area was just outside Hong Kong, even though in reality the two areas are 630 miles apart.
Chongqing Wulong Karst Tourism is demanding that the producers of Transformers: Age of Extinction pay back the $770,000 plus $650,000 for losses the company faced from closing the Wulong Scenic Area for shooting and a further $1.93 million in compensation, leading to a total of $3.35 million.
The fourth film in the cyborg franchise, Transformers: Age of Extinction has crushed all that came before it in China, racking up $306.28 million at the box office after 24 days. With 133,806 screenings and 3.83 million admissions, Transformers: Age of Extinction is far and away China’s highest-grossing movie ever.
