Good Fear Film’s Chris Bender and Jake Weiner are teaming up with L.A.-based production outfit Honora for Stonefly, a thriller by commercial and music video director Pedro Martin-Calero.
Spanish-born Martin-Calero, who has helmed spots for companies such as Honda and videos for artists such as The Weeknd, is making his directorial debut with Stonefly, described as a psychological thriller driven by family drama and teenage angst and underpinned by a murder mystery.
Martin-Calero is known for having a penchant of blending the real with the surreal, something that will come into play, as his feature project also delves into hyperthymesia, the ability to recollect minute autobiographic details as well as the exact emotional state a person was in at the time.
Bender and Weiner are boarding the indie as exec producers, giving the project heft, as the duo bring a wide swath of experience with movies such as Under the Silver Lake, the upcoming thriller from It Follows filmmaker David Robert Mitchell and Disney’s live-action remake of Mulan.
Giles Andrew and Elliott Watson, who have compared Martin-Calero to Alfred Hitchcock and Roman Polanski, are producing via Honora, an up-and-coming production company whose mandate is to work with first-time filmmakers. The duo recently produced Dean, written, directed by and starring Demetri Martin. It will be theatrically released by CBS Films in June.
Co-written by Francisco J. Kosterlitz, Stonefly is set to go into production in fall 2017.
