“Wouldn’t you prefer to eat when all the work is done, Ella?” she suggests to Downton Abbey‘s Lily James in the title role. And don’t try calling her anything but “Madam” or donning an old but beautiful dress, Cinderella — it’ll only get that garment turned into rags while you’re locked away in the attic, without that glass slipper, which fairy godmother Helena Bonham Carter calls “comfortable.”
Still, Blanchett’s darkness is outshined by Cinderella’s late mother, played by Hayley Atwell. “I want to tell you a secret that will see you through all the trials that life can offer: Have courage, and be kind,” she tells her daughter. “You have more kindness in your little finger than most people possess in their whole body.”
Also starring Richard Madden as Prince Charming, Disney’s Cinderella hits theaters in March 2015.
