After its most successful year in history, with a 2016 global box-office haul in excess of $320 million, EntertainmentOne used the fourth day of the CineEurope trade show in Barcelona to showcase its upcoming slate of movies set to be released across its international territories and from its own production arm.
The brand-new trailer for Kathryn Bigelow’s Detroit, a period crime drama set during the riots in 1967 and starring Brits John Boyega and Will Poulter, was shown, alongside an exclusive clip from another real-life drama, Entebbe, which dramatizes the hijacking of an Air France flight in 1976. Detroit — a product of eOne’s deal with Annapurna Pictures — is set for release Aug. 4, while Entebbe isn’t due out until next year.
The gathered audience also saw footage from George Clooney’s dark comedy Suburbicon, which eOne is releasing in the U.K. in November, plus an exclusive first look at the trailers for The Ritual, starring Rafe Spall, and The Children Act, based on the book by Ian McKellen and led by Emma Thompson and Stanley Tucci.
Just as the latest season of the Emmy-winning Veep draws to an end, more political satire is coming from its creator, Armando Iannucci, with a specially assembled selection of footage from his second feature, The Death of Stalin, served up. The film, which is being released domestically by IFC, is due out later this year.
Another Brit comedian, Steve Coogan, was featured in an exclusive clip from Stan and Ollie, in which he stars as an aging Stan Laurel alongside John C. Reilly as Oliver Hardy. eOne co-financed the film with BBC Films and will release the title in 2018.
Jessica Chastain popped up briefly onscreen to introduce behind-the-scenes footage from Molly’s Game, the directorial debut of Aaron Sorkin and based on the explosive memoir by former poker queen Molly Bloom. eOne, which also co-financed the title, is releasing the movie in Canada, the U.K., Australia/New Zealand, Benelux and Spain, while STX has domestic rights.
And although no footage was yet available, eOne took the opportunity to rev up its Narnia franchise revival. The Silver Chair, the fourth book in C.S. Lewis’ much-loved Chronicles of Narnia series, is being directed by Joe Johnston (Captain America: The First Avenger), with David Magee (Life of Pi) writing the screenplay.
