Aronofsky is working on a big-budget film on the life of Noah for Paramount and New Regency.
Gareth Cattermole/Getty ImagesBARCELONA — Paramount unspooled new footage from Darren Aronofsky’s 2014 biblical epic Noah, starring Russell Crowe, Anthony Hopkins, Jennifer Connelly, Emma Watson and Logan Lerman, during its slate presentation Wednesday at CinemaCon.
It also previewed clips from scheduled 2014 releases Jack Ryan, which stars Chris Pine as a young Ryan, and the film’s director, Kenneth Branagh as the villain; and Jason Reitman’s Labor Day, starring Kate Winslet as a single mother and Josh Brolin as a stranger on the run.
Plans for the fifth installment to the Mission: Impossible series, as well as a third from the G.I. Joe franchise and a sequel to Hansel & Gretel, were emphasized by Paramount Pictures International president Anthony Marcoly.
Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, he said, brought in $170 million overseas.
Of Paramount’s summer movies, he said G.I. Joe Retaliation resulted in $255 million at the international box office, an improvement of 70 percent from the first film; and Star Trek Into Darkness — which opens in its final European territory, Spain, in two weeks — is “on track to more than double the international box office of its predecessor.” The third and upcoming tentpole in Paramount’s summer slate, Brad Pitt’s World War Z, was screened in its entirety at CineEurope.
Marcoly also discussed several high-profile 2014 tentpoles. “The potential is enormous,” he said of June’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, as it is being produced by Michael Bay, who also is helming next summer’s Transformers 4. Hercules was previewed via a brief clip featuring Dwayne Johnson with helmer Brett Ratner, who called the film “the Hercules of this generation.”
The 2014 lineup also includes Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, starring Will Ferrell, Paul Rudd, Steve Carell and Christina Applegate; Paranormal Activity: The Initiation; and the first feature from Paramount Animation, SpongeBob SquarePants.
