The Cinema Audio Society’s 51st annual CAS Awards for outstanding achievement in sound mixing will be presented Feb. 14 at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel. Here’s a cheat sheet for the ceremony.
On Interstellar: The sound mix on Christopher Nolan‘s Interstellar — which received some complaints when the film opened, but Nolan explained that it is exactly as he intended — is one of the five nominees in the category for live action features.
Rounding out the category are the sound mixing teams behind American Sniper, Birdman, Guardians of the Galaxy and Unbroken.

Four of the five — American Sniper, Birdman, Interstellar and Unbroken — as well as Whiplash are nominated for the Oscar in sound mixing.
An Oscars note: In the past 12 years, six of the winners of the live action feature competition went on to win the Oscar in sound mixing. The past three years the winners have matched. That included Hugo, Les Miserables, and last year’s winner, Gravity.
CAS didn’t snub The Lego Movie: In the animated feature category, CAS nominated the sound mixers behind The Lego Movie, along with the mixers of Big Hero 6, The Boxtrolls, How to Train Your Dragon 2 and Penguins of Madagascar.
There are several double nominees: Rerecording mixers Jon Taylor and Frank A. Montano have two nominations in the live action features category, for Birdman and Unbroken. They also have a pair of Oscar nominations for their work on the same films. Also, Gregg Rudloff and Thomas J. O’Connell are nominated for American Sniper as well as The Lego Movie.
Other awards: Boyhood director Richard Linklater will receive the CAS Filmmaker Award, and production sound mixer David Macmillan will receive the CAS Career Achievement Award.
Macmillan earned Oscars for The Right Stuff, Speed and Apollo 13.
