La La Land’s “City of Stars” won the award for best original song at the Oscars on Sunday.
The tune beat out “How Far I’ll Go” from Moana, “Audition (The Fools Who Dream)” from La La Land, “Can’t Stop the Feeling” from Trolls and “The Empty Chair” from Jim: The James Foley Story.
The song was composed by Justin Hurwitz, with lyrics by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. It is sung by Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone in the Damien Chazelle film, and was performed by John Legend at the Oscars ceremony.

“I was educated in public schools where arts were educated and valued,” Paul said upon accepting the award, which got applause throughout the venue. Pasek also thanked his mother: “She let me quit the JCC soccer team to be in a school musical. So this is dedicated to all the kids who sing and write and all the moms who let them!”
The 89th annual Academy Awards, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, took place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on Sunday.
