In February, A24 acquired U.S. rights to The Lobster amid mounting financial problems with Alchemy, which picked up the film last year at Cannes.
Like The Lobster, Killing of a Sacred Deer stars Colin Farrell. The screenplay was written by Lanthimos and Efthymis Filipou.
HanWay introduced Killing of a Sacred Deer at the ongoing Cannes film market.
Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe of Element Pictures (Room, The Lobster) are producing. Film4 and New Sparta Films financed development. The producers negotiated the deal with A24.
Inspired by a Euripides tragedy, Killing of a Sacred Deer centers on Steven, a charismatic surgeon, and a teenage boy who seeks to integrate him into his broken family. When the boy’s actions become increasingly sinister, Steven’s ideal life starts to fall apart and he is forced to make an unthinkable sacrifice.
