What do you do after you win an Oscar? If you’re Colin Firth, you challenge yourself by taking on a Southern accent for your next role.
The King’s Speech actor stars in Magnolia Pictures’ Main Street, a drama about a small town in North Carolina that is shaken by an outsider who comes in with a plan to reinvigorate the town’s suffering economy.
Fellow Brit Orlando Bloom also plays a Southerner and a policeman in the small town. The screenplay was written by the late Horton Foote (who wrote the screenplay for 1962’s To Kill a Mockingbird) and the project was shot Durham, N.C.
Directed by Tony Award winner John Doyle, Patricia Clarkson, Ellen Burstyn, Amber Tamblyn and Andrew McCarthy also appear in the film. It is slated for release on September 9, 2011.
