Comic book legend Stan Lee has abruptly canceled his appearance at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con.
The Hollywood Reporter has learned that the 91-year-old co-creator of Spider-Man, Hulk, Avengers and X-Men was due to make appearances and signings on Friday and Saturday, but is bowing out due to losing his voice.
“Unfortunately, Stan Lee has lost his voice due to laryngitis and is unable to attend this year’s San Diego Comic-Con and has regrettably had to cancel his appearances,” said his spokesperson, confirming the news. “Stan is otherwise well and in good health, though he is disappointed to miss the event and wishes everyone a great time.”
Lee has been a hallmark of the convention since its earliest days, as the former Marvel Comics editor-in-chief was living in Los Angeles and working on getting Hollywood’s attention when Comic-Con began its toddler years. And this is one of a only handful of Comic-Cons he will have missed.
Lee is due to appear at other conventions later this year, such as San Antonio’s Alamo City Comic-Con in September and his own meetup, Stan Lee’s Comikaze, in October in Los Angeles. He last appeared at Phoenix Comic-Con in early June and at the London Film & Toy convention on July 11-13.
Those still jonesing for their Lee fix can catch him making his usual Marvel movie cameo in Guardians of the Galaxy, out Aug. 1.
. That’s a big deal to me.””]
