COLOGNE, Germany – Cornelia Hammelmann will replace Christine Berg as head of Germany’s Federal Film Fund, the DFFF, as of Feb. 1.
The DFFF hands out some €60 million ($78 million) annually in the form of tax rebates to productions that shoot in Germany. Recent benificiaries include the sci-fi epic Cloud Atlas from directing trio Tom Tykwer and Lana and Andy Wachowski; Saoirse Ronan-starrer Hanna; and Bollywood blockbuster Don 2, which shot in Berlin.
Berg, who has run the DFFF since its launch in 2007, will take up a job as deputy chair at the German Federal Film Board, the country’s national film subsidy body. In its five years in operation, the DFFF has backed 527 projects with some $380 million. The fund, which provides an up-front tax rebate for qualifying films, has become a model for similar set-ups across Europe.
