The Warner Bros. film, which will feature an all-Asian cast, centers on the lives of wealthy Chinese families living in Singapore. It follows Rachel Chu (Wu), an American-born Chinese economics professor who travels to her boyfriend Nick’s hometown of Singapore for his best friend’s wedding. Before long, his secret is out: Nick is from a family that is impossibly wealthy, he’s perhaps the most eligible bachelor in Asia and every single woman in his ultra-rarefied social class is incredibly jealous of Rachel and wants to bring her down.
Awkwafina will play Peik Lin, Rachel’s college friend.
With a script by Peter Chiarelli (The Proposal) and Adele Lim (TV series Lethal Weapon), the film is produced by Color Force’s Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson, and Ivanhoe’s John Penotti, with Tim Coddington, Robert Friedland and Kwan serving as executive producers.
Chris Pang (Marco Polo), Sonoya Mizuno (La La Land), Jing Lusi (Stan Lee’s Lucky Man) and comedian Ronny Chieng (The Daily Show), as well as a number of Singaporean actors, including Pierre Png, Fiona Xie and Tan Kheng Hua round out the supporting cast.
Crazy Rich Asians is being filmed entirely on location in Singapore and Malaysia.
Awkwafina is a new New York-based rapper who has been quickly building up an acting career, nabbing roles in Neighbors 2 and the upcoming female Ocean’s Eleven spinoff, Ocean’s Eight, with Cate Blanchett and Sandra Bullock. She’s repped by UTA, Principato-Young Entertainment and Schreck Rose.
