LONDON — Danny Boyle‘s 2012 Olympics opening ceremony in the British capital is among the six programs vying to win this year’s audience award at the British Academy of Film, Television and Arts’ television nods.
Voted on by readers of Radio Times, the British answer to TV Guide, other programs vying for the popular vote HBO’s Homeland and the U.S. premium channel’s Game of Thrones.
There will also likely be a strong challenge from homegrown nominees Call The Midwife, The Great British Bake Off and Strictly Come Dancing.
Previous winners of the BAFTA TV award’s only publicly voted prize went to Channel 4 sitcom The Inbetweeners.
BAFTA chief executive Amanda Berry said the six shortlisted shows – selected by a panel of 19 media journalists – “reflects the increasing diversity of tastes among British viewers.”
“Each one of the programs has captured our attention, and it will be fascinating to see which one is the public’s favorite when we reveal the winner,” she said.
The Arqiva British Academy Television Awards, hosted by Graham Norton, will be held at the Royal Festival Hall, on London’s South Bank, on Sunday, May 12 on BBC One.
