You can’t keep a good man down — especially when he’s a Madman. Michael Allred’s popular superhero is coming back in style next year, with Dark Horse Comics launching a new series of hardcover editions collecting the 30-year career of the always amiable Frank Einstein.
A former agent of the Tri-Eye Agency, Einstein came back to life with unexpected superpowers as well as a strong case of amnesia, leaving him the most agile, good natured zombie around — in other words, the ideal superhero, as well as the perfect encapsulation of Allred’s laidback, retro style. Madman first appeared in 1990’s Creatures of the Id, before going on to appear in a number of series — including Madman, Madman Adventures, Madman Comics and The Atomics — across the following 30 years.
The Madman Library Edition series, projected to run six oversized volumes, will collect all of Allred’s Madman Universe stories and additional material in a specially-selected reading order, including pin-ups and artwork from Jack Kirby, Frank Miller and more. The first volume will contain material from 1990 through 1996, including the debut series for the character appearing in color for the very first time.
“Madly excited to see years and years of planning coming together to provide the definitive library of all my solo creations and their interconnectivity!” said Michael Allred in a statement. “Rarities, flip action sequences, & bonuses galore. Plus hundreds of pages in color for the very first time! No library card required!”
The Madman Library Edition Vol. 1 will be released March 10, 2021 in comic book stores, with a mainstream bookstore release March 23, retailing for $99.99. The book is currently available for pre-order.
