During the MTV Movie Awards, there was plenty of excitement for the new footage from The Dark Knight Rises, but no one expected it to become an emotional moment when a retrospective montage was shown before the new clip.
“This summer, the story comes to an end,” Gordon-Levitt said during the introduction.
The first clip was a montage of moments from Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, including several images of the late Heath Ledger as The Joker. The inclusion of Ledger sparked an emotional response from Bale.
“It’s great to remember Heath,” Bale said, his voice wavering, when the clip was done.
Bale then went on to introduce Nolan, who took the stage to talk about the new clip from The Dark Night Rises.
“Every great story demands a great ending,” he told the crowd at Universal City’s Gibson Amphitheatre.
The new footage (watch above) begins with a scene featuring Gordon-Levitt and Anne Hathaway as John Blake and Selena Kyle. “A girl’s got to eat,” says Hathaway’s Kyle, aka Catwoman.
The chilling new clip then moves into a lot of new footage of Batman (Bale) and his enemy Bane (Tom Hardy). At one point, Batman throws a punch at Bane, but his fist is easily caught by the villain.
When the footage moves back to Blake and Kyle, Blake is heard asking her what she knows about the man. “That you should be as afraid of him as I am,” she responds.
The Dark Knight Rises opens in theaters July 20.
