MEXICO CITY — Mexican President Felipe Calderon said over the weekend that the U.S. Congress should review its “mistaken” gun laws in response to Thursday’s shooting during a screening of The Dark Knight Rises in a Colorado movie theater.
“It harms all of us,” the president tweeted in reference to existing gun laws in the U.S.
The president’s comments come as Mexico finds itself in the thick of a vicious drug war that has claimed more than 50,000 lives since 2006. Following the debacle of Fast and Furious, a failed federal arms-smuggling sting operation, Mexico has been pressuring the U.S. to crack down on the transport of weapons across the border.
Warner Bros. has canceled red carpet and press events in Mexico City for the The Dark Knight Rises premiere. Actors Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway and Joseph Gordon Levitt were set to attend a press conference in the Mexican capital. Opening night events were also canceled in Japan and Paris.
Calderon offered his condolences to the American people for the tragic shootout, which left 12 people dead and 58 injured.
