Another castmember from the original Star Wars movies has voiced a desire to appear in the upcoming Episode VII — although David Prowse would rather play an entirely different character than Darth Vader should he make a return appearance.
In an interview with his local newspaper, the Hull Daily Mail, the now-78-year-old Prowse said that he had initially been offered the role of Chewbacca, but demurred because the role “was like a big gorilla [and] I didn’t think I could I could be in a gorilla suit for three months.” Instead, he ended up as Darth Vader, the primary villain of the original trilogy — and, ultimately, the central character of the entire series to date.

However much Prowse enjoyed that role, though — and he clearly did, saying that “nobody remembers the goodies in films. Everyone remembers the villains, [and] Vader is now recognized as the ultimate screen villain of all time” — he’d like to play a different character if he managed to make it into Star Wars: Episode VII. “Unfortunately, Darth Vader was killed off,” he admitted, adding that “it would be nice to come back and do another character, because no one’s ever seen my face. I was never unmasked.”
Even if he doesn’t appear in the new trilogy, Prowse hopes that they’re more grounded than the last time Star Wars came back to the big screen. “I didn’t like Star War I, II and III at all,” he said. “I think the common opinion now is they were really bad movies. There’s no comparison to the original movies. They had a much more believable story.” Well, maybe with the exception of the two Death Stars, hidden relatives and wild coincidences scattered throughout, of course …
