David O. Russell is looking to reteam with his American Hustle star Jennifer Lawrence, and he may have found the vehicle.
Russell is in discussions to rewrite and direct an untitled biopic of Joy Mangano — best known as the inventor the Miracle Mop — which is set up at Fox 2000, THR has confirmed.
Sources say that Russell wants Lawrence to play the part of the entrepreneur, but seeing as Russell is only beginning his dealmaking, the Lawrence factor is considerably a ways off.
The film would tell the story of Mangano’s transformation from a single mother in Long Island to a QVC star.
Mangano is a fixture on the Home Shopping Network with her many inventions, probably none more famous that the mop. She began her inventing as a teen and kept on dreaming and tinkering while still a single mom raising three kids.
The project is seen as an female empowerment tale and has a script by Annie Mumolo, the scribe behind Bridesmaids. John Davis and John Fox are producing via Fox-based Davis Entertainment. Ken Mok is also producing.
Russell is coming off his award-winning commercial hit American Hustle, which has 10 Oscar nominations. The filmmaker has shown an affinity to work with many of the same actors. Before Hustle, he worked with Lawrence in Silver Linings Playbook from which she won her first Oscar in the best supporting actress category.
Linklater, Dazed and Confused, that was a job interview for me, right? So I tucked in my shirt, man, shaved my hair, pressed my jeans and went in ’cause it was a job interview. And he was like: ‘Hey, OK. Let your hair grow out, and maybe, uh …’ And I was like, ‘I can do that?’ (Laughs.)”
