Columbia PicturesROME — The Capri, Hollywood Film Festival announced Monday that it would honor Oscar-nominated director David O. Russell at its upcoming edition.
It also will pay homage to The Great Beauty (La Grande Bellezza), an artful tribute to the Italian capital from Paolo Sorrentino, Italy’s candidate for the foreign-language Oscar.
The island festival, which runs Dec. 27-Jan. 2, making it the last festival of this year and the first of next year, previously announced that it would screen Steve McQueen‘s 12 Years a Slave as its opening-night film. It will be the Italian premiere of the film.
The Monday announcement of the dual honors was made by director Michael Radford, the 18-year-old festival’s honorary chairman, who called Russell’s latest film, American Hustle, proof “that the story is the centerpiece of the art of cinema and when combined with a superb cast of actors who can bring the story to life, the result becomes cinematic magic.”
The event will screen American Hustle and honor it with the Master of Cinematic Art award on Dec. 28 in what will be the film’s Italian premiere.
Capri, Hollywood honored Russell’s previous film Silver Linings Playbook as film of the year and Bradley Cooper, the film’s male lead, as actor of the year for his work in the production.
The Great Beauty, Sorrentino’s fifth Cannes Palme d’Or-nominated film, will be given the Capri festival’s International Visionary Movie prize.
