Ahead of the character’s cinematic debut in next year’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, DC Entertainment is returning to Wonder Woman’s earliest days with a newly announced digital comic book series, The Legend of Wonder Woman.
Written and drawn by Womanthology‘s Renae De Liz, with inks and colors by Ray Dillon, the series will focus on Diana’s life from before she left the island of Themyscira for “Man’s World” through her claiming what DC describes as “her ultimate destiny” as the Justice League’s warrior princess. Although it’s unknown whether or not the series connects with mainstream DC canon, Legend will fill the current gap in DC’s back catalog for a standalone “origin” story for the character before she appears in the spotlight in Zack Snyder‘s March 2016 movie.
The series will be the character’s second solo digital outing, following up on the critically acclaimed Sensation Comics anthology that featured a number of creators offering up their own takes on both Wonder Woman and the mythology surrounding the superhero. Last month, DC revealed that that series would be ending in December.
Legend is one of a number of new launches from the publisher in January, alongside previously announced series for Swamp Thing (written by the character’s co-creator, Len Wein), Batman villain Poison Ivy and a relaunch for the company’s second Green Lantern series, now titled Green Lantern Corps: Edge of Oblivion.
