Ryan Reynolds is cute and cuddly in the first trailer for Detective Pikachu.
The film voice stars Reynolds in the title role, with Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom‘s Justice Smith co-starring as a young man named Tim who has given up on his dreams of becoming a Pokemon trainer. When his father, a detective named Harry Goodman, goes missing, Tim meets Detective Pikachu. Tim has a special connection to Detective Pikachu, being the only person who can understand him, and he and the Pokemon team up to solve the mystery of Tim’s missing father.
Kathryn Newton, Rita Ora, Ken Watanabe, Bill Nighy and Suki Waterhouse also star. Goosebumps filmmaker Rob Letterman is directing the project, which is the first live-action Pokemon movie in the franchise’s 22-year-history.
In real life, Smith is a big Pokemon fan.
“I have all the original generation Pokemon cards,” So does my sister. We used to play the card game all the time even though we didn’t know the rules,” Smith told The Hollywood Reporter earlier this year. “We would make up our own rules based off what we knew about the video game and the TV show.”
Warner Bros. opens Detective Pikachu on May 10, 2019.
