Cloud 9 stars Dove Cameron (Disney Channel’s Liv & Maddie) and Luke Benward (ABC Family’s Ravenswood) as Kayla and Will, respectively, who are forced to work together in a dog-grooming shop after Kayla is kicked off her competitive snowboarding team and Will’s profession as a snowboarder becomes Internet’s “epic fail” following an accident on the slopes. Ashley Tisdale is an executive producer on the movie.
When asked about her shift from acting to producing, Tisdale tells The Hollywood Reporter, “I’ve always been someone who likes to have ideas, and I didn’t know how to make that come to life. After meeting with my partner Jessica Rhoades, ideas started to get going and you see the story come to life. It’s a rewarding experience. ”
Tisdale describes the casting experience as “surreal” as she remembers being in the exact same position from High School Musical. “I’m helping their dreams come true,” she says. “It also teaches you as an actress it’s not personal when you don’t get a job. As a producer, I know now you can’t take it personally. You’re either the character or you’re not.”
For Dove and Luke, they say they got their characters down during the casting process, where they had to kiss. “It was the weirdest audition I’ve had,” says Benward, whose credits include How to Eat Fried Worms. “They had Dove and I do a dramatic scene. They said to me, ‘Luke, I want you to leave the room, storm back in and kiss her.’ I guess it proved they liked our chemistry from then onwards.”
Cameron says she felt a close connection with the script and that it transformed her as an actor and person. “Something I learned was the fact that even if you are the only person who believes in yourself, that’s all you need in order to be successful,” she says.
Cameron is starring in another upcoming Disney film, Descendants, directed by Kenny Ortega, which tells the stories of Disney villains’ offspring. Cameron will play the daughter of the evil witch from Sleeping Beauty. “The film will release in 2015. Expect big things,” says the Cloud 9 star.
This is Tisdale’s second producing venture along with ABC Family’s Young and Hungry. She also released her new single with her music-producing fiancé, Chris French, on Dec. 16. Titled “You’re Always Here,” she dedicated it to her late grandfather.
Cloud 9 is set to premiere on Disney Channel on Jan. 17. The movie also stars Patrick Fabian, Kiersey Clemons, Mike C. Manning and Andrew Caldwell. Watch a sneak peek of the movie above.
