Disney has withdrawn its application to trademark “Seal Team 6,” the counter-terrorism unit responsible for killing Osama bin Laden, the Wall Street Journal reported.
The new comes days after the U.S. Navy challenged the studio’s attempt to trademark the name by filing its own applications.
A Disney rep said the company is pulling its application “out of deference to the Navy.”
Days after news broke of bin Laden’s death, Disney filed an application May 3; it covered everything from clothing to games. Then, on May 13, two applications were filed on behalf of the Navy.
The competing applications sought trademark status for “SEAL Team” posters and clothing, as well as “Navy SEAL” goods and services, identifying the Navy squad as an organization that “develops and executes military missions involving special operations strategy, doctrine and tactics,” Fox News reported Wednesday.
The Hollywood Reporter recently reported that the book SEAL Team Six: Memoirs of an Elite Navy SEAL Sniper, is being rushed into stores this week ahead of its originally scheduled May 24 publication date.
