Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is setting sail for the Mediterranean, where it will have its international premiere at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival.
The fourth movie in the successful Pirates franchise, starring Johnny Depp, is set to have its world premiere at Disneyland on May 7 at an outdoor, 3D screening. It would then move on to Cannes, where it would screen out-of-competition on May 14.
Following its Cannes unveiling, it is scheduled to open in France on May 18 and in the United States on May 20.
Although Cannes doesn’t typically showcase movies that have premiered elsewhere, it always hosts one or two star-studded Hollywood features, and the Pirates cast, which includes Depp, Penelope Cruz, Geoffrey Rush and Ian McShane, has lots of red carpet potential.
Disney has used Cannes to showcase its movies in the past: Last year, Pixar’s Up opened the festival.
Disney declined to comment on the possibility of a Cannes visit. The official festival line-up will be formerly announced Thursday.
