Dolby Vision Projector, Canon 4K Lenses Among HPA Engineering Award Winners

Technologies from Canon, Dolby, Quantel, Panasonic and Sony will be recognized with Engineering Excellence Awards at the 10th annual Hollywood Post Alliance Awards, to be held Nov. 12 at the Skirball Cultural Center.

Dolby will be honored for development of its Dolby Vision high dynamic range laser projection system, which launched in the spring with movies such as Disney’s Tomorrowland and Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out. Canon was selected for its Super 35 mm 4K cinema zoom lens, which offers a 20:1 zoom range with a 1,000 mm telephoto capability.

Panasonic will be honored for its Super 35 mm 4K DCI imager, used in the Panasonic VariCam35 4K camera, to support high dynamic range, 4K resolution and high frames rates up to 120 frames per second. Quantel will be cited for its Pablo Rio, which is capable of performing real-time editing, color correction and finishing in resolutions up to 8K (16 times HD) and at a high frame rate of 60 frames per second. And Sony will be recognized for its BVMX300 30-inch 4K OLED monitor, which displays full 4K (4,096 x 2,160) images as normal range or as high dynamic range.

In addition, Colorfront will receive an honorable mention for its Interactive HFR (high frame rate) Frame-Blending, which features real-time, interactive HFR frame-blending with a simple slider interface to control the amount of motion blur of a moving object.

Said Joachim Zell, chair of the Engineering Excellence Awards committee: “This year we saw a particularly diverse and compelling array of entries, and the judging was difficult and close across the board. It is a testament to the incredible ingenuity of the engineering community that we saw such a competitive field.”

As previously reported, HPA founding and current president Leon Silverman, who is general manager of the digital studio at The Walt Disney Studios, will receive the HPA Lifetime Achievement Award during the ceremony.
